Zero Waste Project

Beckmans Swedish, fashion

In an installation at the Stockholm Fashion District on 14-16 August, Beckman's fashion twins will show how a garment can be designed with zero waste.

-Constraints often lead to creative thinking. The challenge in this project is to construct and design garments with zero waste. The students have been forced to use 100 percent of the chosen material," says Göran Sundberg, lecturer at the Fashion Program.

Designers are part of the solution

A drastic change is needed in the way the fashion industry consumes materials. With the increasingly low prices and values of clothing, ultra-fast consumption of garments and waste has become a major problem. 60 billion square metres of fabric are thrown away on the cutting floor every year - waste created during product development and production, before the fashion reaches the consumer. Creative solutions are therefore needed, and they can be found in patterns, designers and consumers.

-Through the macro approach (pattern construction) and the micro approach (decoration and surface design), the students have achieved the goal of zero waste. As designers, they should aim to eliminate all waste and see the sum of the material as part of the design problem," says Göran Sundberg.

Zero Waste is included as part of the teaching of design and fashion orientation with sustainability as a focus during the three-year Fashion programme.
