From concept to implementation – art direction at Beckmans

In the Art Direction course, final-year students on the Visual Communication program get to work in real-world collaborations, where ideas meet reality and product design its place in context.

Four groups – four projects

This year, students developed communication concepts for exhibitions and fashion shows in close dialogue with other programs at Beckmans.

One team collaborated with the fashion program on their industry showcase at Stockholm Fashion District. Another developed the communications for Beckmans Open House. A third group developed the concept for the upcoming graduation exhibition. And a fourth group worked together with the design program—and in collaboration with Konstfack and Malmstens—to create the identity and communications for a joint exhibition.

Making everything come together: the communication behind this year's design exhibition

"The most enjoyable part has been seeing everything come together at the exhibition, both the overall identity and our designers' own pieces. It was great to see how our work interacted with the whole and with all the students' projects. They have done an incredible job, and it has been a privilege to follow their process during the course, say Mika Hyvönen, Molly Schedin, Olle Svensson, and Edda Eliasson.

Their assignment was twofold: to develop a communication concept for the design program's exhibition, where final-year students showed furniture created in collaboration with the industry, and to create a common identity for the design colleges' exhibition at Moderna Dansteatern. A complex project with many participants—and many perspectives.

– The biggest challenge was the project management part. It was very educational, but also demanding at times to keep all the information together. It resulted in a lot of documents and to-do lists, but it gave us a real understanding of how communication is shaped in interaction with others.

Through collaborations across programs and industries, students are given the opportunity to work conceptually, strategically, and creatively—in processes where creative excellence and professional grounding go hand in hand.
