Challenges in ice for Beckmansadjunkt

Beckmans Staff, Swedish, visual communication

Jonas Johansson, lecturer at Visual Communication, together with sculptor Jordi Claramunt and architect Lukas Petko, will create one of the season's rooms at The Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi.

At Beckmans, Jonas Johansson teaches and supervises design with technology as a starting point - from digital adaptation of product design and product development to interactive installations.

What can you tell me about your room?

-Our room challenges visitors to work together and, with the help of light and cunning, gain access to a magical sanctuary where shadows and reflections wander together undisturbed.

What will be the biggest challenge?

-None of us has worked with ice before, and I have the least experience in general working with stone and construction. The biggest challenge will be to work methodically and smartly, not to get stuck on details but to constantly move between detail and overview. I will also be working a lot with digital techniques to enhance the experience and as the ice moves and to some extent melts, there are also some technical challenges...

Tell us about your collaboration with Jordi Claramunt and Lukas Petko!

-I met Jordi in the Catalan desert, a fantastic sculptor and man with a great imagination. Lukas is an architect and was a student at Hyper Island during a course I gave. None of us have worked together before to any great extent and we live in different places, so the first time we will all meet will be this winter. I'm looking forward to seeing Jordi face the Nordic cold!

The ice hotelin Jukkasjärvi opens on 14 December.
