Tensta konsthall x Beckmans - visual communication in the public space

Sofia Hulting visual communication

Who is public space designed for? And how can graphic design, art and advertising be used to negotiate access to the city?

New identity explored spatially and in motion

Our first-year students in the Visual Communication program have been investigating the matter together with Tensta Konsthall and the ongoing exhibition Chronos, under the guidance of Stefania Malmsten, lecturer.

-"I've had this course for several years and the current exhibition Chronos addresses several of the questions we usually work with, for example about who the public space is designed for. Tensta konsthall's activities are also very much based on the place itself. The fact that we have had the opportunity to test their new fantastic graphic identity (by Johanna Lewengard and Benedetta Crippa) and how it can be used spatially and movably has been incredibly instructive, says Stefania.

Mission to make the art gallery more visible to residents

Based on the new identity, the gallery's activities and the Chronos exhibition, the students have explored how the gallery can become more visible and accessible to the residents of the area.

-"We quickly realized that we wanted to work with Tensta Konsthall's identity outside and beyond the art gallery to make it easier for residents to discover it. We have done this by printing banners, designing new street talkers in the art center's identity that also communicate that it is free admission (which is incredibly important to reach out with) and get the identity out in the square outside, says Ella Farestam, student.

-"The most challenging thing has been to come up with ideas that are in line and feel right with Tensta Konsthall and their new identity, which we would also have time to produce in three days. I think we succeeded and it feels super fun!
