Beckmans student Jessica Westerberg is this year's Championshiper
- It was so great to win! In all competitions, time has been the main challenge, to create something that you feel you can stand for in such a short time. And to dispose of the time, to understand and come up with an idea that is reasonable to get to in the few hours we got. In the final it was especially evident because it was a completely free task with the only requirement to use three different materials and that I also got a full hour less time than the others, says Jessica.
Well grounded in its design process
The time deduction was due to Jessica coming in third place in the first duel of the final. But with a clear idea and a lot of fighting spirit, Jessica quickly managed to get her product together in just 3 hours – a metal, wood and leather ampel that impressed the jury strongly.
-A large part of the work as a designer is about the design process. At Beckmans we are constantly trained in it; to find methods to express what we want, to understand why we do what we do and to question why. So when I have taken on the tasks in the programme, I have felt well grounded in my process where the importance of the hand is extremely important to me. It is through the craftsmanship and the properties of the material that I have gained security in the exploration of what I can make of what I start from. It's something I've become stronger in and realized in myself during my time at Beckmans, says Jessica.
Jury's motivation
"The winner possesses a lot of imagination and great creativity and has also shown a clear vision to go their own way. With a keen sense of how to combine two different expressions, this winner has created his own personal expression. Last but not least, this year's Championships have proven to be a fighter out of the ordinary."
Participates in the exhibition Ung Svensk Product design 2020
From today, all her works from the program created in wood, clay, paper, leather and forging are on display in the exhibition Ung Svensk Product design Special Edition at Dunkers kulturhus in Helsingborg. At the beginning of next year, they will also be exhibited in the exhibition Ung Svensk Product design 2020.
