Statement dress for the Minister of Culture designed by Beckmansstudent
'I found out I was going to design the dress three weeks before. So it's taken three weeks from design process to finished result. I used to make a collection in two weeks. We at Beckmans are fast, haha! Jannica says to Elle who did an interview with her and the Minister of Culture in the days before the gala.
Dress that sparked debate
On a white ribbon attached under the skirt is the quote "The culture school saved my life and has shaped me into who I am". According to the Minister of Culture, she chose the quote as a statement to show her support for the cultural school and with the message that all children have the right to culture.
The move has sparked debate in Aftonbladet, where opposition mayor Olle Burell (S) believes that the savings have been pushed through by the Culture Minister's own party colleagues together with the Alliance and that she should call them up. "Such a conversation, I think, would do much more for all young people in Stockholm than a statement on a dress. It was a statement that led me to write this book. And who in the long run might be able to get the Minister of Culture to make that call to his party colleagues and ask them to change their mind. Maybe something has given. "As always, I choose to be an optimist," he wrote. Read the full article in Aftonbladet.
Laser cut sound waves
The material of the dress in is sidencrepe and it has a life in mesh and chiffon. The pattern that runs from the front to the back and down the back and skirt is designed to look like sound waves laser cut in mesh in Sala. Even the letters in the quote are made in the same laser-cut mesh fabric as the sound waves and it is Jannica's 7-year-old daughter who has had to create the font. She had to write the quote before it was cut out with a laser and applied to the tape. The ribbon with the text is removable so that the dress can also be used without quotes.
When asked why the Minister of Culture chose a student from Beckmans to design her dress, she replies:
"On the one hand, the Swedish fashion industry is very strong and growing in the world. Both in terms of the big chains, but also all the emerging creators taking their place. That's why it felt important and fun to work with someone who is about to make that journey.
