Open Lecture - Greed for Knowledge & Control: Alexandra Borg and Nina Ulmaja

Beckmans open lecture, Swedish, visual communication

What can a deep dive into Sweden's first modern novel teach us about today's book design?

Literary scholar Alexandra Borg and designer Nina Ulmaja talk in an open lecture about their multi-year research project that provides many perspectives on book design, book production and book history.

Strindberg's Little Red

Their research eventually resulted in the August Prize-nominated book Strindberg's Little Red. The book revolves around August Strindberg and his debut novel The Red Room; a book that immediately attracted a lot of attention when it came out in 1879, which has been called "Sweden's first modern novel" and which has been published in over 140 editions, has been filmed, turned into a graphic novel and translated into countless languages.

"Strindberg's Little Red is a nerdy and general educational journey through the history of the book, typography and reading. With the Red Room as a prism, literary scholar Alexandra Borg and designer Nina Ulmaja take us in the hemp and tell us how it all started and how it continued. It's incessantly instructive and entertaining, and every beautifully designed page oozes love for the Book," the publisher wrote.

The lecture is part of the lecture series V&K.

V&K is a public lecture series on Beckman College of Design where current work in visual communication is discussed from the designer's perspective. V&K was initiated by the Visual Communication program during the autumn semester 2017 and this lecture is number 4 in the series.
