Innovative product of form student launched at Designtorget

Beckmans Product Design

Form student Madeleine Nelson developed Regrow in a course in small-scale production at Beckmans last year. It has now been launched as a
product in Designtorget's regular range.

-I've always been interested in environmental issues. A few years ago I read an article about the possibility of re-growing vegetables. Since then I have been replanting a lot of leeks in my kitchen window. But I realised that the leeks needed support so they wouldn't lie flat on the bench," says Madeleine Nelson.

Sustainable design in a dual sense

Regrow is as much an interior decoration as a simple tool for recycling food waste. The user simply places the vegetable in the scaffold and then in water that covers the roots and helps the plant to grow up again. After about 14 days there is a fresh new vegetable. Leeks, lettuce and lemongrass are some of the vegetables that can be placed in the rack and given new life.

"Today, there are major environmental problems all over the world with excessive consumption. Of all the food produced, we throw 25% in the trash. Of this food waste, 35% are vegetables and fruits. It's time we started reducing our waste of vegetables and started to grow our vegetable waste – for ourselves and for our future generations," says Madeleine.

Several products of form students have been launched by Designtorget

The first prototypes of Regrow were presented in limited edition at Designtorget a year ago and sold out the same day. Regrow is the second product from last year's course to be included in Designtorget's regular range. The first was the pedestal Unify, which was launched last autumn and before that it was the tray Elvira by Malin Berglund.

In the course, which is given the second year of the Form program at Beckmans, students are tasked with freely developing a product from idea to finished result. Through the course, the student gains valuable insights into entrepreneurship and production processes for their future as designers. For the past four years, we have collaborated with Designtorget and this year's products developed in collaboration with the company were recently launched for Stockholm Design Week 2018.
