Design Dialogues | The Kinship Method
October 05, 2021
In 2017, Beckmans initiated an investment in artistic research that has so far resulted in five different research projects with links to our educational areas product design, fashion and visual communication. Some of the projects have been presented in various formats, including at the National Museum, Sven-Harry Art Museum and Rian Design Museum.
October 5 lecture & conversation | The Kinship Method
In the project The Kinship Method, five designers challenge themselves and each other by trying out new methods that create new knowledge and question the ideas about how design is created. By extension, alternative designer roles and more ways of producing design emerge. The project has been initiated and run by Margot Barolo, designer and program manager for Product design at Beckmans.
On October 5, Margot Barolo will present her project and explain how she has used it as a means of highlighting the designer role and design production. The presentation is followed by a conversation with Andreas Nobel, professor of furniture design at Malmstens LiU, and one of the participating designers in the project, as well as Maria Göransdotter, senior lecturer in design history and design theory at umeå University. Based on The Kinship Method, the conversation is about the importance of the interaction between theory and practice, how the project affected its own practice and how a different design history can be possible if the focus shifts from the products to designers and their processes and thus creates new ways to design.
The conversation is moderated by Salka Hallström, author and journalist.
