Beckmans at Stockholm Creative Edition

Beckmans alumni and artistic research, Swedish

Beckman College of Design is part of Stockholm's new design week, Stockholm Creative Edition, through the curated exhibition The New Locality and The Kinship Method & FRIENDS.

The New Locality 23-29 Sept

The exhibition The New Locality is a collaboration between Beckmans, which showcases works by newly established designers, and reform design lab presenting 3D-printed furniture of biocomposite. The exhibition highlights local craftsmanship, local production methods and Swedish producers and is curated in a collaboration between Hanna Nova, New Era Studio and Annika Berner at Beckmans with styling by Sophie Bratt.

Participating newly established designers from Beckmans include Swedish Girls, Sizar Alexis and Jessica Westerberg, and in addition, graduation projects from the school are shown by Josefin Zachrisson, Johanna Fosselius and Gustav Winsth as well as prototypes developed in collaboration between form students and Dux, Gärsnäs, Källemo, Storängen, Johansson Design and Kinnarps.

"We want to create a platform to show the work of our newly established designers, provide the opportunity to reach a larger target group and create interest in what new design is about today - the issues, methods, materials and expressions that young designers start from and use," says Annika Berner, head of external relations and responsible for alumni activities at Beckman College of Design.

The Kinship Method & FRIENDS 23-26 Sept

During the Stockholm Creative Edition we also meet The Kinship Method & FRIENDS, which has been invited to show experimental projects based on alternative design processes and methods.  In an exhibition at A House Ark, The Kinship Method brings together creators, several of whom are designers who have recently graduated Beckmans such as Isa Andersson, Frida Fröderberg, Joakim Zickert and the art and design collective Swedish Girls, all of whom are trying new ways of creating design.

-One way to break patterns, structures and outcomes is to create designs that emphasize other aspects. New forms are given space together with new ideas. During the design week, we show a variety of projects that are all linked together by the fact that they use alternative design methods, says Margot Barolo, designer and program manager for Product design at Beckmans and who has initiated and run the research project The Kinship Method.

About The Kinship Method

The Kinship Method is an artistic research project from Beckman College of Design carried out in 2018-19 where five designers challenge themselves and each other by trying out new methods. The project has previously been shown at Sven-Harry Art Museum and Rian Design Museum. In the spring of 2021, the book about the project was published by Arvinius Orpheus. On October 5, the project will also be presented in a lecture at Beckmans.
