Graduation project from Beckmans nominated in Dezeen Awards 2020

Beckmans Swedish, exam2020 and product design

The Pinot lounge furniture in design by Mika Lindblad has been selected for the Dezeen Awards Longlist,in competition with over 4,300 entries from 85 countries.

Comfort without cold foam

Pinot is a piece of furniture that provides comfort without cold foam. Traditionally, sofas and armchairs consist of an advanced construction that is completely concealed by padding and upholstery. It is wooden frame, steel springs, moulded foam, cold foam, glue and synthetic fabric, materials that should be recycled separately but which are all too often burned up.

I want to do the opposite! Pinot is a lounge furniture without padding where comfort has been created thanks to the construction and natural properties of moulded wood and leather. All parts can be separated to be restored or recycled.

Challenging spring for graduation projects

Completing the degree projects at Beckmans in the spring was this year particularly challenging for the students as the pandemic meant many limitations.

"Not having the same access to workshops made working with full-scale models more difficult. You don't always think right and you have to test with the right material to know how they behave. How much will the wooden slats fail? How much will the skin pull? But thanks to the help of the fantastic team at Swedese in Vaggeryd, everything went well in the end, says Mika.

Pinot caught the attention of DN in the spring and during the summer it has been exhibited in the furniture store Gösta Westerbergs Möbel on Kungsholmen. After the graduation exhibition, it will be shown at möbeldesignmuseum, in trendgruppen's showroom and in Swedese's showroom.

"I've had an incredible response and to have the chance to showcase my degree project means a lot. This is where I can show who I am and build connections with producers.
