Bernadotte Art Awards awarded to fashion designers Amanda Borgfors Mészáros and Pär Engsheden

Beckmans graduation2018 and fashion

Amanda Borgfors Mészáros is a recent graduate of the Fashion Program, where Pär Engsheden, fashion designer, is the program manager. The apprentice and master are two of the five talents to receive the Bernadotte Art Awards 2018.

Craft-based practice

Amanda Borgfors Mészáros works from a craft-based practice where quality always takes precedence over quantity. Hand sewing and hand embroidery are often mixed with machine sewing, where the choice of materials plays a decisive role. Materials such as vegetable tanned waste leather are frequently used, as well as a new found favourite - woven ribbons, which she overlaps to create sculptural garments, greatly reducing waste in production.

-To be awarded the Bernadotte Art Award means a lot to me, especially considering where I am right now, at the beginning of my career. I'm incredibly grateful that my way of creating has been recognised and rewarded, and it obviously gives me a strong incentive to continue," says Amanda.

Collections shown around the world

Her previous collections from Beckmans have been shown at Stockholm Fashion Week, at Copenhagen Fashion Week in the Designers' Nest competition and at Paris Fashion Week. Her collection Global Nomad is currently on tour in the exhibition Ung Svensk Product design and is a collection that was a finalist in the international competition Redress Design Award in Hong Kong last fall. Her latest collection, DNA, was shown at Beckman's graduation show at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in May. It will next be shown at Design Students' Selected 2018 at Formex in August.

Master of couture

Since 2015, Pär Engsheden has been the Program Director for Fashion at Beckman College of Design and a lecturer in fashion design. He attended Beckman's fashion program in 1988-1991 and was already known at the school for his tailoring skills, his extreme accuracy and penchant for classic elegance.

Pär Engsheden works primarily with couture and is a Royal Court supplier. For several years he has collaborated with Sara Danius, Professor of Literature at Stockholm University, and together they have created a number of high-profile dresses that she has worn on official occasions.

Over the years, he has received several honours, including being elected to the Stockholm Master Tailor Guild, a membership that testifies to great professional skill, and was an honorary prize winner at the 2011 Ellegalan. In 2013, he was one of the first fashion designers ever to be awarded the Illis Quorum Royal Medal by the Minister of Culture.
