Alumni selected for fashion exhibition at Rian Design Museum
September 18, 2021
Yanis Dorey's graduation collection from Beckmans 2021 is part of the fashion exhibition To Construct a Self that is currently underway at the Rian Design Museum.
Another Beckmansalumn, Marie Isacsson (2018), shows her collection Fantasy Land that examines the relationship between the actual and the fictional through online alter-egos. In addition, two of the catalogue's texts are written by lecturers at Beckmans; Lisa Ehlin exploring the image in relation to the self and Maria Ben Saad, who writes about critical thinking in fashion which ties in with her research project at Beckmans, Critical Fashion Project.
Collection exploring multicultural identity
In Yanis Dorey's collection There is Nowhere like Home, But Home is Nowhere, he explores his dual cultural identity by connecting clothing traditions and history from France and Algeria. Classic haute couture from the 1940s and 50s and men's tailoring meet draped of long pieces of fabric as in the Algerian traditional dress code. The collection ties in with the roots of each culture while at the same time providing a vision of cultural diversity. According to Yanis Dorey, the collection is a first step towards developing a new visual vocabulary that can be used to represent multicultural identity.
A meeting between fashion and the digital world
Already in her graduation collection from Beckmans 2018, Marie Isacsson explored gaming and its relation to fashion. During her MA at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, where the collection Fantasy Land took product design, she further developed the theme. According to Marie Isacsson, digital tools and platforms will play a new role for the fashion world and the fashion world will in turn play an increasingly important role in the digital world. In the future, we might own both digital and physical wardrobes at the same time, because maybe we don't need to own a garment just to appear in a photo on Instagram?
About the exhibition
The exhibition To Construct a Self is a group exhibition with ten contemporary fashion designers at the Rian Design Museum that shows different representations of identity and the relationship between the self and the dressed body. It is linked to issues of gender and cultural affiliation but also to consumption and can take the form of a play between fantasy and reality. The exhibition will be on display until 21 November.
