Visual dance with costume by Beckmans alumni
17 August 2019
The dance company consists of dancers from the Royal Swedish Ballet. Artistic director is principal dancer Nadja Sellrup.
Outdoor premiere at Parkteatern
On August 17, the outdoor premiere of the all-female evening A/Symmetry at Parkteatern in Vitabergsparken, Stockholm. The performance consists of two new works, Terra by choreographer Helena Franzén and Everything Will Collapse in the End by Mari Carrasco.
Costume that enhances the choreography
For the piece "Terra", three alumni from 2018; Julia Correia de Verdier, Felicia Halén Fredell and Robert Jonsson, have collaborated with choreographer Helena Franzén. Julia Correia de Verdier collaborated with choreographer Mari Carrasco on the costume for "Everything Will Collapse in the End". The project is part of Beckman's alumni project with recent design graduates led by Annika Berner.
-"The collaboration process with choreographer Helena Franzén and Mari Carrasco has been very interesting," says Julia Correia de Verdier, "to be able to work so closely with choreographer and dancers and create a new context. With dance costume, it's crucial to think about how the garments behave in movement, how the body's movements are made visible. It's exciting to start from a work and reinforce and support the choreography through the costume.
-We have worked with asymmetrical details in both works, the costume for Helena's work has a flow. On the shirts we wanted to loosen up the feeling of front and back, all parts of the shirt should feel interesting to look at. In Mari's work the costume is partly inspired by the fencing costume, the white tight suit and the diagonal opening at the top. There is also a play on the classic, as in the ballet dress with the material in different lengths. A play that is present in Mari's work, she says.
Visual dance that tickles the senses
The first part of the outdoor premiere in Vitaberg Park shows dynamic movements, playful moments and precision in Terra - a highly physically articulated duet with two female dancers of integrity. The act is a signature of choreographer Helena Franzén, a poetry of movement with the acuity of feeling and the empathy of thought.
In the second part of the evening, choreographer Mari Carrasco twists and turns the context of classical ballet in her work Everything Will Collapse in the End. An act filled with rhythm, score and change, exploring new forms of what ballet can be and express.
