Handverk
Details from my couture project Handverk.
In our future, new technologies have continued to be incorporated into our lives. Many professions and social functions have been entirely replaced by machines and artificial intelligence, leading to more people working from home and the disappearance of our shared physical spaces. Daily human contact takes place online, and the lack of physical meetings has become exceedingly rare and palpable.
Similarly, new digital technologies and technical innovations have taken an increasingly prominent place on the couture scene. The knowledge of traditional craftsmanship is dwindling and is soon to be nothing but a memory. The longing for what feels warm and genuine grows stronger by the day, and the human hand has never been more coveted.
If the eyes are the mirror of the soul, then the hand is a symbol of our uniqueness and the tools we use to touch the world around us. It symbolizes humanity’s longing to shape and create, defining what makes us who we are. The fingers are the foundation of the hand’s entire function and have inspired several of the design elements seen throughout the creation. The joints, folds, and curves of the hand have, in various ways, formed the basis for the shape, texture, and expression.
A hand-knitted, growing skirt climbing out of a structured jacket locked behind a screen symbolizes the longing for genuine craftsmanship, closeness, and intimacy that seeks to break free from the digital shielding of the real world and emphasizes the importance of the free hand.
