COTURE BLANCHE

My creation for the couture of the future takes its starting point in my wish for what our future will look like, since fashion usually is a reflection of its time. In my vision of the future, some of todays boundaries between women and men are blurred.
In couture, historically and in present time, there has almost solely been garments for women’s fashion highlighted and shown. In my vision of the couture of the future garments for men will occur as much as garments for women and thus be a part of the norm.
Fashion is both an indicator and a reflection of society and its norms. Norms are changing and fashion follows, but the creation of fashion can also be designed in the way that new norms are created. It’s these mechanisms I as a fashion student have as a ground to build upon.
In recent times conservative forces have grown, gender roles are traditional again and the silhouette for men’s fashion is in the conservative manner. In corresponding manner it has in times when liberal trends have been dominating been more usual with androgynous silhouettes and garments.
With this as a starting point I have, to show my vision of the couture of the future, chosen to work with three classical couture elements: veil, corset and long wide skirt. In my creation the skirt has become trousers and all elements have been moved to correspond with the male body. The heart held in the arms becomes a symbol of love, life and death. It also becomes a symbol of hope for the future, a reminder what people have sacrificed to change the harsh norms we live with today for an accepting and inclusive future.
