Tag to Type

Genom typsnittsdesign utforskar Tag to Type friktionen mellan två motsatser; graffitins fysiska akt med dess kroppsliga uttryck gentemot överdriven digital standardisering.

Monospace-typsnitten Throwie och Droid baseras på egna graffade tags som förlagor, därefter digitalt rekonstruerade modulärt i ett kvadratiskt grid. Designmetoden blir en motpol till det expressiva visuella språk som kännetecknar graffiti. Projektet handlar inte om att representera en subkultur, utan om transformation, hybrider och arbetssätt som motsäger varandra – att tvinga in ett fysiskt och intuitivt uttryck i ett system. 

Trycksaken visar resultatet av denna designprocess och stilprovens textinnehåll återger tags från min närmiljö, i en ny form.

Through typeface design, Tag to Type explores the friction between two opposites: the physical act of graffiti, with its bodily expression, and exaggerated digital standardization.

The monospace typefaces Throwie and Droid are based on my own graffiti tags as source material, which were then digitally reconstructed modularly within a square grid. The design method becomes a counterpoint to the expressive visual language that characterizes graffiti. The project is not about representing a subculture, but about transformation, hybrids, and conflicting methods of working — forcing a physical and intuitive expression into a system.

The printed publication presents the results of this design process, and the specimen texts reproduce tags from my local surroundings in a new form.
