Products designed in 2024 by second-year Product Design students in collaboration with Designtorget

We are now presenting six products designed by second-year students in the Product Design programme, in collaboration with Designtorget.

The course gives emerging designers an opportunity to engage with production at an early stage in their practice.

“It has been an incredibly rewarding and exciting course in so many ways. We’ve moved beyond the classroom and into the industry, working closely with our manufacturer. One thing we’ve learned is that everything takes longer than you expect. No matter how carefully you plan, things happen along the way that are beyond your control. But we worked through each stage, step by step, all the way to launch—and had a lot of fun in the process,” say Siri Lövén and Joelle Aune, who developed the LUMI wall light together.

LUMI is a contemporary, sculptural interpretation of the classic wall light, with a concealed light source that creates a reflected play of light.

“At first, many manufacturers turned us down, and those who said yes quoted prices that were far too high. But we had a strong vision and believed in our product. Eventually, we found the perfect partner in Alumbra, who helped us navigate the production process seamlessly.”

Six products on sale from 8 May

This year’s course has resulted in a drinks crate, a wall light, a knife rack, a vase, a candle holder and a new way to create a bespoke window trellis.

LUMI by Siri Lövén and Joelle Aune

LUMI takes its name from the French word lumière, meaning light. It is a modern, sculptural interpretation of the classic wall sconce, with a concealed light source that creates a reflected pattern of light.

Plant-Based Nuggets by Anna Nyman & Matarena Sjöberg

Plant Based Nuggets are used to connect plant stakes into a window trellis. Paired with climbing plants, the trellis can provide privacy. The nuggets make it possible to create a wide range of interesting structures to support plants.

Street Flowers by August Bällgren and Love Persson

Gatublomster is a vase made from reclaimed paving stone and a flower-shaped aluminium disc. It explores the material and symbolic contrasts between the hard stone and the soft form of a flower.

led by Axel Peters and Ellen Nilsson

led is a modular candle holder designed for both tealights and pillar candles. Its playful, inventive design allows it to be assembled in a variety of ways, guided by your imagination. By collecting led modules, you can create unique candle arrangements that bring a personal touch to your home. The meeting of materials between the tealight’s aluminium cup and led creates a seamless transition, giving the cup an aesthetic value of its own. Made locally in Stockholm from aluminium, led was designed by Ellen Nilsson and Axel Peters.

Samla by Karin Forsberg, Victoria Johansson and Alva Jonasdotter

Samla is a sustainable knife block made from reclaimed offcuts from the furniture industry. Its clean, playful design makes it a natural fit for any home.

BACKMAN by Sara Lagerin and Emelie Svensson

With its stackable design, BACKMAN offers a practical and visually appealing way to store drinks. It playfully combines the classic wine rack with the functionality of a bottle crate, creating a distinctive interior feature that can be filled with your favourite drinks.

About the collaboration with Designtorget

The collaboration between Beckmans and Designtorget was launched to give students the opportunity to experience what it takes to start their own business. This year marks its tenth anniversary. Over the years, several products developed during the course have gone on to become part of Designtorget’s range, where they have remained for several years.
