This is our interpretation of Kristin Lavransdotter part 1 written by Sigrid Undset Nobel laureate in literature 1928.
“The novel takes place in a fictitious 14th century community strongly governed by the moral framework of the Catholic church. Fifteen-year-old Kristin, betrothed to a landowner’s son, falls in love with and is seduced by another man. In that moment her identity is transformed from desirable innocent to sinful and shameful concubine.
Our interpretation seeks to draw attention to the absurdity of valuing the female body in terms of consumable commodity and the cruelty of women’s virginity being viewed as the broken seal on a luxury item that suddenly renders it used, valueless and disposable.”
