Design students take over Mercedes Benz with glass exhibition

Beckmans Product Design

Last autumn, form students from Beckmans produced glasses on the theme of cocktail together with the creator house Alma. The glasses are now on display in the Mercedes Benz showroom.

The students were commissioned to design glass products for cocktails – which were then inflated by one of Sweden's foremost glassblowers, Eino Mäkelä in Fredrik Nielsen's cabin The Garage Stockholm.

13 glasses and a carafe

The result, 13 glasses and a carafe, is shown along with models and sketches from the design process. The challenge for students has been to interpret a company through a product and at the same time develop their own idiom. Having the opportunity to have their design proposals inflated has given students increased insight and understanding of the possibilities and limitations of glass. For most of the students, it was the first time they worked with the glass material. Glass can have its own will and this requires the designer to have a clear idea as it goes quickly in the cabin.

Glass exhibition "Creative Cocktail"

"Collaborating with creative and quality-driven companies and organizations is an important part of teaching and at the same time giving students the opportunity to showcase projects to a larger audience means a lot," says Annika Berner, Head of External Relations at Beckmans.

The glass exhibition "Creative Cocktail" will take place in the Mercedes Benz showroom on Regeringsgatan between 27 March and 6 April.  Opening on September 26 at 17-19.
