Fredrik Westin - Memory maps

The beauty of a city is that it is filled with meaning for so many different people. We are surrounded by people and meaning, but most of the time we do not see it. This project aims to uncover the meaning that exists in the city by presenting hand-drawn maps produced by people in Stockholm. I have taken on the role of cartographer, letting strangers decide on a place of personal significance, and then running there. One place leads to another place, and becomes nodes in a system that connects to a meaningful whole. The work consists of the book, and road markers taken from the maps.

A city is a place overflowing with meaning for many people, each with their unique perspectives and experiences. However, we often overlook the richness that surrounds us. This project aims to uncover and highlight the intricate tapestry of meaning that exists in the city by presenting hand-drawn maps created by individuals in Stockholm. As a cartographer, I have collected maps from strangers who selected a location of personal importance, which I then run to. Each place forms a node in a system that connects to create a greater sense of coherence and purpose.
The final work encompasses a book and waymarkers derived from these maps.
